NI Cyber shares key challenges and opportunities for sector with Minister Archibald

Highlighting the need for SME / FDI balance in our regional ecosystem, skills development and promoting the exceptional talent emerging from our renowned universities and colleges were the key topics discussed at a recent roundtable with Minister for the Economy Dr Caoimhe Archibald.

Key delegates from across the sector informed the minister on the significant opportunities to further enhance our global reputation, while also signalling challenges, and demonstrating how clustering can be a vital component in building our competitive edge.

Jo English NI Cyber Cluster Manager “The NI Cyber ecosystem has an enviable reputation for deep technical knowledge and a strong talent pipeline, which to date has made it an attractive proposition for FDI, as well as locally founded companies. As we mature as a cluster, it is imperative that we both maintain this reputation and extend upon it, be ambitious and draw upon our key strengths for competitive advantage.

“We were pleased to hear about the key initiatives the Department is spearheading and thank the Minister for engaging with us productively as we strive to drive the cluster forward.”

The Minister said: “The north’s innovative cyber security sector is a cornerstone of our digital economy. The sector has fostered strong academic-industry partnerships and increasing global inward investment is testament to our local expertise.

“The Digital Skills Action Plan is geared to addressing the skills shortages that the sector has been facing. Expanding education pathways and addressing barriers to entry, will strengthen the talent pipeline, whilst creating more opportunities for high quality jobs and career development.

“I will continue to work with the sector to seize the opportunities and address the challenges it faces to ensure it remains globally competitive.”
